Here’s 7 Tips to Help You Scout Locations Better

We remember the James Bond and Mission Impossible movies because of the insane stunts performed in the world famous locations. In our videos, we may not have the budget to shoot at such scenic locations, but we can better scout to make the best of what we have.

Here are 7 tips to better scout locations for a video shoot-

1) Scout at the Right Time

Go to the location at the time you will be shooting the video. This will allow you to assess the sunlight and other details that vary depending on the time of the day.

2) Map out the Sun’s Path

If you’re going to shoot at the location for the whole day, then you will have to map out the path of the sun, so you can schedule your shoots better based on the availability of that light at that particular set. You can check out our blog on lighting for more info.

3) Check out for Sounds

This won’t matter if it is a music video. But if it is a film or a commercial with sound recording involved then you have to check for the sounds in the environment. Will there be train sounds, are there airplane passing over any time of the day, are there noisy pets, Is there any construction happening nearby. We need to make sure of all these so we have the least noise possible.

4) Take Photos of the Location

This is important since, you can then share the photo with your DP your production manager, your talent, etc. And explain to them what is the frame you’re planning. This gives them a visual idea of the shoot.

5) Check for Power

Check if there is electricity in the sets, or if you need an external power source. What is the power that you can extract from the given source and is that enough for the types of equipment you’re planning to use?

6) Evaluate the Area

Check if the location can easily be reached through google maps. Does the name of the location pop up or do you have to send the GPS coordinates separately. How can the location be reached? Is there public transport or do you have to arrange a cab?

7) Take Notes on the Location

Take notes on all the things that you think of on location so that you don’t forget any of the details after you leave the place.

One last advice is that you can location scout on google maps, so you can check out the location right from your home instead of having to go on location blindly.

Is Sacred Games India’s answer to Dan Brown?

The new Netflix Originals series from India has been getting rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The success has prompted Netflix to order a second season of the same. While the rest of the world waits for the next season, we couldn’t help but analyze it.

Sacred Games is an Indian web television series based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 thriller novel of the same name, it is also the first Netflix Original from India. The series is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap who also produced it under their banner Phantom Films.

Now, that it has been a month since its initial release, we can’t help but feel that the series has a lot of similarities to Dan Brown novels. Especially, the Robert Langdon series. Here are a number of elements that are common between the two (Spoiler Warning!!!) –

1) A Murderous Beginning

Almost all of Dan Brown novels begin with the murder of someone important. This puts the story right into the action. It doesn’t waste time to set up the world. In Sacred Games, the first scene (apart from the death of the dog), is the Tarantino-esque murder of Jojo Mascarenhas. Now, if you think she was an expendable character then, by the end of the episode, the primary protagonist, Ganesh Gaitonde kills himself.

2) Around God, Religion

The Robert Langdon series of books are all around religion, God, politics etc. Similarly, sacred games deal with religion, the communal riots etc. With the main character Ganesh Gaitonde actually uttering the dialogue, “Kabhi kabhi lagtha hain ki apun hi Bhagwan hai” which translates to, “Sometimes I feel like, I myself am God”.

3) Ticking Time Bomb

Well, not a literal time bomb, but there is always a deadline before which either it is the end of the world or a secret is going to be published. Robert Langdon and his companions have to solve the mystery within that given time frame. This helps the author expand time. You can spend 30 pages just detailing one particular hour in the story. In Sacred Games, that is 25 days. They say, that in 25 days every one except Trivedi will die.

4) Use of Facts & Real Events

The way Dan Brown uses facts, you really want to believe in whatever conspiracy theory he’s brewing. The use of facts or real events in Sacred Games isn’t to support an underlying conspiracy theory but to show how the lives of the protagonists were influenced by the happenings of that era.

5) Symbolism

Robert Langdon’s character is a symbology professor at Harvard University. So, it’s no wonder that the plot points in all of the books are rife with symbolism. In its Indian counterpart, the most prominent introduced to us in the first season has been the Mandala. This symbol has been a constant recurrence in the series, going so far as to be a part of the initial title sequence.

Work Stories #4 – When Children taught us about Social Harmony

A Sunday morning, the sun shining brightly in the sky. Happy faces all over. Children from the SaPa School of Music and the government school of Immadihalli are getting their hands dirty. We are running around trying to capture everything.

Let me give you a little context. SaPa, the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts was founded by India’s leading violinist-composer Dr. L. Subramaniam and Bollywood Legend Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam to accomplish their dream of creating a home for global music in India. L Subramaniam’s children Ambi Subramaniam (an accomplished violinist himself) and Bindu Subramaniam (vocalist) head the SaPa institute here in Bangalore.

Thair Saadam Project

On the other hand, Mahesh Raghvan is a Carnatic fusion artiste with a very diverse repertoire across radio, television and digital media. Mahesh Raghvan, Bindu, and Ambi Subramaniam have come together to form a new band, “Thair Saadam Project”, literally meaning Curd Rice Project. This is a funny take on the fact that all of them are of Tamilian descent.

After the success of their first song as a band, (the cover of Coldplay’s “Something Just Like This”) for the second song they chose to cover “A Million Dreams” from the movie The Greatest Showman. They wanted to make this song the anthem of SaPa School’s 10,000 Deeds Campaign.

The 10,000 Deeds Campaign

A world without poverty, hunger, with gender equality and full sanitation. Seems utopian doesn’t it? But those are just some of the goals of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs cover social and economic development issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, global warming, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, environment and social justice. To drive action on these goals the students from the SaPa School of Music have taken the “10,000 Deeds Pledge” to show that every deed counts. No deed is too small.

The Idea for the Music Video

The initial plan was to shoot the video like any cover song where the artists just perform the song on screen. But, a song filled with such meaning had to have a video that showed the purpose behind the song. While brainstorming with the band, they came up with the idea that the students of SaPa School should paint a wall mural for the video. At the same time, we were making a mini-documentary for SaPa about their SaPa In Schools programme. We had visited a couple of government schools for the same. It was there that we got the idea that the children should paint on the wall of a government school with the students from that school. Now, that would be the perfect set up for the video.

The Lesson on Unity

On the day of the shoot, we set off to the government school of Immadihalli and reached there by 5 in the morning. The plan was to first get the shots of the musicians performing. The students would come by later to paint the wall. The sun rose on the east side. As the golden hour passed by, we finished the shooting of the musicians. By eight o clock, the students of SaPa came along with their parents. We had the drawing teacher from SaPa help the students to make the mural.

The moment the children of SaPa started playing with the paint and applying them, the government school kids started gathering around them. They started getting curious and slowly, they joined too.  The SaPa kids started teaching them a classical song and they started singing it. What was beautiful about this shoot was we got to see, the kids from so many different backgrounds come together through art. They were singing together, painting together and playing together. We, along with the musicians even got to play football with the kids. Obviously, within 5 minuted we were out huffing and puffing and gasping for breath.

The shoot ended at around midday. We were all really hungry and exhausted. We planned to go to a pizza place at the nearby Forum Value mall and celebrate the successful shoot.

3 Tips on Choosing the Best Music for your Videos

Music is very important when it comes to setting the tone of your video. It can evoke emotions to feel a particular scene, it can give you goosebumps, it can also disorient you from the scene. So, selecting the right song that expresses the theme of the scene is crucial when you’re making your video.

Matti Haapoja is a director of Photography from Finland based out of Toronto, Canada. He is also the face of the self-titled youtube channel, formerly known as Travel Feels. In this video, he gives tips on how to choose the right music for your video.

There are a lot of music licensing sites around the internet, especially for youtube content namely, PremiumBeat, Artlist, EpidemicSound etc. Whichever platform you choose, here’s how you can select the best music –

1) Watch your footage

You have to go through your footage to get a good idea of what kind of shots are you gonna use and how you are gonna tell the story. Just put all the shots on a timeline and see them through to get the feel of the edit. Does it have a cold arctic feel or is it a warm summer day or are there people, are they happy? Sad? Etc.

2) Don’t go too Niche

Everyone has different music tastes, so do you. But when you’re making a video you have to create a balance between the kind of music you like and the kind other people will like. If you opt for very niche music, you’re limiting the size of your audience. But at the same time, you need to have your own individuality so that your video doesn’t feel generic.

3) Tempo and structure

If you want fast paced cutting, then you can’t use a slow song for that. Similarly, you need to make sure the structure of the song matches your edit. Some songs have a repetitive pattern, while others have highs and low points. Do those points meet similar high and low points of your video? We need to take all of this into consideration. Here is an example of a video we made, where we used to the structure of the song to bring out the character of the city of Mysore.

8 Types of Videos to Grow your Company’s Brand

Videos are the in thing right now. Every major company in the world is investing on video content from Apple to Twitter. So, how can a startup or a corporate tap into this resource to improve their brand? Here are a few different videos that your company can produce.

1. Product Explainer Videos

An effective way to communicate how your products work is through a video. Explainer videos give you the freedom to explain each of the features with vibrant colors through 2D motion graphics, infographics, 3D rendering and live-action video.

2. Tutorial Videos

Many companies have orientation/training week for freshers where employees teach newbies of the technologies and ethics of the company. This can also be achieved through interactive tutorial videos.

For the folk music band Swarathma, we made a tutorial video where their lead guitarist Varun taught the Guitar tabs of their most famous song, Pyaasi.

3. Corporate videos

Corporate videos encapsulate a huge umbrella of video works that can be done in a company. But when you say corporate video, the first thought that comes to your mind is a video which explains their work and their mission along with that a glimpse into the work culture, etc. These videos are generally used to showcase the company to prospective employees, investors, donors etc.

4. Showreel videos

Showreel is a montage containing examples of all the work of a company be it services or product based. Showreels are used to showcase their portfolio to prospective clients, investors, etc. They say a picture says a thousand words. Similarly, you could explain a lot with one showreel instead of having to verbally explain each and every project you’ve ever completed.

5. Commercial videos

Commercials are a great way to capture public attention. Beginning with the audio ads on radio, they evolved to TV where the visual component was added. Now, with the advent of social media and the rise of the 6 sec & 15 sec ads, commercials have become more relevant than ever.

Here’s a 30 sec commercial we made for Playo for their new year campaign. Playo is an app that allows you to book courts and meet players to play sports.

6. Crowdfunding videos

When Kickstarter launched in 2009, they changed the course of innovation forever. Before, if someone invented a product he had to either sell the patent to a manufacturing company or invest in the manufacturing himself. With crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, everyone who had a great idea and promised to execute it could get investment from the public. With that rose the demand for explainer videos specially designed for crowdfunding campaigns.

India Inclusion Summit is a platform that creates awareness on mental and physical disability. We created a crowdfunding campaign video for them for their 2017 Fellowship programme.

7. Mini Documentary

A mini-documentary is a documentary typically 5-15 minutes long which consists of a montage of interviews and visuals about a particular topic. These are great to showcase customer/employee experiences of using a service, to tell interesting stories of the impact of a company or present case studies.

India Inclusion Summit helped foot painter Ramakrishna Narayanaswamy to achieve his lifelong dream of meeting his idol, Amitabh Bachchan. We captured the retelling of that story through a mini-documentary.

8. Event after-movie

An Event after-movie is a short recap of an event such as a conference or a fest or any such event. These include visuals from the event as well as interviews where we capture the essence of the event as well as its story.

Work Stories #3 : In the vast wilderness beside River Kaveri

Om Shantidhama is a Vedic gurukula situated near Mekedaatu on the banks of river Kaveri(around 90km from Bengaluru). It provides educational, medical and spiritual services to all people without any discrimination on grounds of caste, creed, color, religion, language, nationality etc. No one will be denied the opportunity to acquire knowledge is the philosophy of this institution.

They wanted a corporate video for their school highlighting the various facilities of the school. This was all new territory for us, so in order to understand them better, we took a one day trip to the campus. What we saw had us completely stupefied. We came back, wrote a script for the video and set out on a two-day trip to shoot for the same.

DAY 1

We left early morning at around 4:00 AM. That’s all we remember, because a minute after we got into the taxi, all of us were snoring. When we reached at around 8, we were given shacks to live in. These shacks were built with bamboo shoots and tiles for a roof. It wasn’t very secure but we did feel closer to nature than ever.

We got ready and set out to get the shots for the day. The school has a sprawling campus that has the majestic river Kaveri river flowing through, gardens that are filled with herbs and flowers, quaint buildings with tiles, hills with luscious greenery and peace. The peace that could only be achieved being far away from the chaos of the city. In short, a lot to be covered in the next two days.

We went around getting beautiful shots of the scenery and of the students in the school. We got shots of the facilities, interviewed a bunch of people from the organization. It was a hard day’s work. In the evening, we had an early dinner that was cooked in the school mess. There were hammocks outside our rooms and we spent hours there relaxing and planning tomorrow’s shoot.

DAY 2

We woke up early morning at around 5, got ready to go the hill viewpoint from which we could see the sunrise. The climb to the viewpoint wasn’t a hard one but the pebbles and stones in the path kept us extra careful of our equipment. Once we reached the summit we kept our cameras pointed at the direction of the faint sun rays and waited. Waiting for the sun to rise from in between two mountains, whose base had a river flowing through with houses on the banks of the river was a scenery way too familiar for any Indian, but still, it was a treat to see.

Afterward, we got down and took shots of the morning prayers, yoga, and other activities. The whole day was spent getting shots of the facilities in the school, the labs, their classes, their talent show, the whole shebang. In the evening we had to take shots of the kids playing. This was the final shot of the day. The kids were playing lagori, cricket, and other games we played in our childhood. Moments later, we were playing with the kids. Who can resist a trip down nostalgia lane?

Finally, we packed our bags and got back into the taxi. In the two days, we had become so friendly with the kids that it was hard to leave them. When we were leaving our taxi was mobbed by the kids. All, we could do was tell them we’d be back. Such assurances!

4 Easy steps to make Corporate Videos

Videos have shown increased engagement and reach than any other format in social media. Corporates and startups have to capitalize on this in order to better their brand awareness and conversion through the use of corporate videos. Brand awareness can be both internal i.e inside the company or on social media. For both of these, the best method is to make corporate videos.

Here’s how you can make corporate videos –

1.Scripting –

A script is the sequence of scenes in your video in written format. To make a good video you need a good script. To make a good script we need to understand the video’s intention, what content should come in it? Two of the most basic structures in a corporate video is the interview or narrated. For interview type, we can jot down the questions to be asked and the points to be said. For the narrated type we can write the complete voiceover script.

Pro Tip: Try to make your script to tell a story. This is more engaging than mere stating of facts.

2.Planning –

Once the script is ready, we can plan on who is going to be interviewed, the location at which the interviews take place and other specifics such as what costume they will be wearing. What is the tone of the video and what time the shooting happens?

3.Production-

There are two aspects to production, the visuals, and audio. For the visuals, we have to make sure the lighting is right in the location. Check out our blog on different lighting techniques.

For Audio, we usually use a lavalier mic that we can attach to a person’s collar or shirt. Lavalier mics are great because they capture the least noise. This is important since office locations usually have loud air conditioning hums.

4.Post-production-

Post-production involves editing the footages to tell your story. There are a lot of video editors out there ranging from the freely available but incredibly powerful DaVinci Resolve to the more professional Adobe Premiere Pro.

For editing, you need a good music track to hold your viewer’s attention and to provide a rhythm to your video. Websites like Premiumbeat, Artlist, Audioblocks, EpidemicSound etc provide great copyright free music.

If you have a voiceover, you need to record the voice a quiet location and edit it to the video accordingly.

Film Analysis : Why is Joker, the ultimate antagonist to the Dark Knight?

We have seen a lot of villains come and go. There can be those who want to rule the world, those who want to take revenge on the world, and then those who just want to watch the world burn. What makes Joker one of the most unforgettable villains in the recent past?

Michael Tucker is a filmmaker, who is more famously known as the creator of “Lessons From the Screenplay”. In this video essay, he explains why Joker maybe the perfect antagonist to Christopher Nolan’s Batman.

To make the points about the film, Michael Tucker references two books, they are ‘Story’ by Robert McKee and ‘The Anatomy of a Story’ by John Truby.

Here’s a summary of the video –

1) A protagonist and his/her story can only be as intellectually fascinating and emotinally compelling as the forces of antagonism make them.

  • The more powerful the antagonist, the harder the struggle for the hero. The harder the struggle, the more compelling the story.

2) How to make a villain powerful? Create an opponent who is exceptionally good at attacking the hero’s greatest weakness.

  • Most of Batman’s power comes from his strength, Joker uses his strength as a weakness, because he is not afraid of death. In fact, he wants Batman to kill him.

3) True character is revealed in the choices a human being makes under pressure – the greater the pressure, the deeper the revelation and the truer the choice is to the character’s essential nature.

  • Throughout the film, the Joker forces Batman into choices that reveal who or what he cares about. E.g) The scene where he chooses to go and save Rachel when both Rachel and Harvey have been kidnapped by Joker.

4) How do you know your antagonist is the right one? It is only by competing for the same goal that the hero and the opponent are forced to come into direct conflict and to do so again and again throughout the story.

  • Both Batman and Joker have their own visions of what they want Gotham to be. Batman wants order a Gotham without crime, Joker wants to upset the establishment and create chaos.
